Lieutenant Colonel Matthew J. Grieser

Commander of Troop Battalion

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew J. Grieser assumed command of Troop Battalion, Madigan Army Medical Center on July 11, 2017. His previous assignment was as the deputy surgeon for the Joint Special Operations Command’s Joint Medical Augmentation Unit.

A native of Oregon, Lieutenant Colonel Grieser enlisted in the United States Army as an infantryman in 1992 with his first assignment at Fort Lewis, Wash. In 1996, he reenlisted as a medical specialist in the Army Reserve until he was commissioned in 2000 when he completed his bachelor of science in chemistry as a distinguished military graduate from the University of Idaho.

Lieutenant Colonel Grieser’s previous assignments include; platoon leader, brigade medical planner and brigade support battalion medical company commander, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C., joint medical operations officer and adjutant to the senior national representative for the NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, J5/J35 medical plans officer and chief of medical operations for the Combined Joint Task Force, Kandahar, Afghanistan. Upon redeploying, he was selected to join the Joint Special Operations Command’s Joint Medical Augmentation Unit, Fort Bragg, N.C., serving as an operations officer and executive officer.

He is a graduate of the AMEDD officer basic and advanced courses and the Army command and general staff college including the advanced operations course. He also completed his master’s degree from Webster University in international relations, graduating with honors.

Lieutenant Colonel Grieser has completed 14 combat and operational deployments to Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, New Orleans, the Horn of Africa region, North Africa and various other locations in the Middle East for contingency operations.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal (third oak leaf cluster), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (first oak leaf cluster), Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal (first oak leaf cluster), Joint Service Commendation Medal with “C” device, Army Commendation Medal (third oak leaf cluster), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (first oak leaf cluster), Valorous Unit Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award (first oak leaf cluster), Master Parachutist Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Combat Action Badge, Combat Medical Badge, Expert Field Medical Badge and the German and Italian Parachutist Badges.
