Frequently Asked Questions

What are the chief benefits of MHS GENESIS?

MHS GENESIS is the first Department of Defense-wide electronic health record to be used by all military treatment facilities. By the time that MHS GENESIS is fully implemented throughout all of the DoD, patients will be able to receive care from any military treatment facility knowing that their health records will follow them. As a unified record, MHS GENESIS will simplify the safe transitions of care across military operations to include at home, in a deployed status, and during permanent change of station moves.

How is MHS GENESIS different from Madigan's current electronic health record systems?

Like all Army military treatment facilities, Madigan currently uses several electronic health record systems for inpatient records, outpatient records, emergency room records, and other areas of care. While care teams can view patients' records in the different systems, this requires extra time to navigate all of the records. With MHS GENESIS, all patient records will be found in one single records system. In addition, for the first time ever, all military branches will use one electronic health records system so that no matter where patients receive their care, their records will follow them.

What will I notice about what's new with MHS GENESIS?

The primary difference that patients will notice is the Patient Portal. While receiving care at MTFs which use MHS GENESIS, patients will no longer use RelayHealth and Tricare Online except for limited functions, such as requesting new providers. With the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal, patients will now be able to directly request appointments and view provider notes. In addition, test and lab results will automatically appear in the Patient Portal. Please note there will be a three-week delay for the ability to request appointments, so expect this function to be available towards the end of November.

What will Madigan's transition to MHS GENESIS look like, and what will patients notice about this transition?

During the first few weeks after our transition to MHS GENESIS on October 21, Madigan will slow down some as we adopt this new system. Appointments will be temporarily reduced as we transition, so we ask that patients schedule annual exams and regular checkups before October 21. In addition, patients are asked to get their medications refilled if possible before the transition, and to complete any lab referrals by then as well. If patients get referrals that are valid past October 21, they are encouraged to keep hard copies of their referrals during the transition. Finally, on October 21, the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal will replace RelayHealth and Tricare Online as the system through which patients can communicate with their care teams and access their health information.

What do patients need to learn and know about the new record and its associated tools (such as the Patient Portal)?

Much of the implementation of MHS GENESIS should be seamless to patients, apart from some possibly longer wait times on October 21 and the weeks after as staff adopt the new system. However, patients should know that their contact information in MHS GENESIS is automatically pulled from DEERS. If patients want to correct their contact information, they need to log on to DEERS at www.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect/ to update their profiles. In addition, patients should be aware that they will need to log on to the Patient Portal through either their CACs, their MyPay password or their DS Logon password. If patients do not have a DS Logon, CAC, or MyPay passwords, they will need to create DS Logon accounts to use the Patient Portal.

When will I be able to start using the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal?

While patients may be able to log on to the Patient Portal and explore it during the weeks leading up to the transition to MHS GENESIS, the Patient Portal will not be active until October 21. At that time, patients may begin using the Patient Portal to message their care teams, see their medical notes, look at their lab and test results, and more. Only medical notes, messages and results from October 21, 2017, or later will appear in the Patient Portal.

When patients move, will their new military treatment facilities be using MHS GENESIS?

The Department of Defense has a multi-year plan for all military treatment facilities to transition to MHS GENESIS. Madigan is only the fourth military treatment facility to transition to MHS GENESIS. If patients go to a site without MHS GENESIS, their care teams will still be able to view their MHS GENESIS records through the Joint Legacy Viewer software. Patients should stay registered in RelayHealth so that they can continue to use it if needed when they PCS.

How will patients be notified of Madigan's transition to MHS GENESIS?

We will keep our patients informed about the benefits of MHS GENESIS, and our transition to it, via social media, RelayHealth, posters, handouts, MWR ads, articles and more.

If patients have questions about MHS GENESIS beyond what their care teams can answer, where should they go for additional information?

If patients have questions about MHS GENESIS which cannot be answered by the MHS GENESIS ads or this webpage, please contact the Madigan Public Affairs Office at 253-968-1901.
