TRANSITIONAL YEAR PROGRAM
(PGY-1)

The Program

The Transitional Year Program is a one year ACGME accredited program located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. The program provides a well-balanced graduate medical education with a broad overview of multiple clinical disciplines. This allows residents who have not yet decided on a specialty the flexibility to experience many different fields of medicine to facilitate choosing a career path. The program provides a solid and diverse clinical experience for physicians who may serve as general medical officers following their first year of training. The program also meets requirements for residents pre-selected for specialized residency programs that require a transitional year (radiology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, and preventive medicine).

The Curriculum

The curriculum is divided into 13 four week rotation blocks. The rotations are scheduled to provide each intern with an opportunity to rotate early in the training year through any specific service that he/she may have a particular interest in, prior to applying for further specialized residency training.

The curriculum consists of the following rotations:

• Family Medicine Clinic
• General Surgery Clinic
• Pediatrics Clinic
• Obstetrics & Gynecology
• Emergency Medicine
• Intensive Care Unit
• Coronary Care Unit
• Medicine wards (2)
• Electives (4)

Additional Training

In addition, the curriculum includes courses in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Trauma Life Support, Combat Casualty Care, medical simulation training, weapons simulation training, and a military unique curriculum. Residents also participate in the annual transitional year retreat. There are 22 transitional year positions available at Madigan.
