COLONOSCOPY FELLOWSHIP

The Program

The Family Medicine Colonoscopy Fellowship is a one year program located at Madigan Healthcare System in Tacoma, Washington. The fellowship provides advanced colonoscopy training to one Army family physician each year. The primary focus of the fellowship is outpatient colonoscopy for the screening, surveillance, and evaluation of common lower gastrointestinal malignancies and disease.


The Curriculum

Fellows will learn and demonstrate competence in the technical and cognitive skills to perform safe and accurate colonoscopy through the use of simulation, didactics, objective criteria, and direct observation. The overall program objectives are as follows:

• Understand colonoscopy indications, contraindications, and complications
• Understand screening and surveillance guidelines to include the management of biopsy results
• Integrate colonoscopy into the overall clinical evaluation of patients with common gastrointestinal disorders
• Effectively provide pre- and post-procedure education to patients and properly obtain informed consent
• Appropriately administer moderate sedation and understand the associated risks
• Demonstrate competence in the technical skills to perform safe and accurate colonoscopy and polypectomy
• Learn the principles of electrocautery, and manage post-polypectomy bleeding using thermal and non-thermal modalities
• Perform approximately 500 colonoscopies and 100 snare polypectomies
• Gain hands-on experience in equipment sterilization and maintenance
• Complete scholarly activities to include presenting at a national colonoscopy workshop and writing peer-reviewed publications
• Learn effective faculty development skills and techniques for training residents in colonoscopy
• Contribute to resident education by presenting CME lectures and supervising residents
• Maintain full scope family medicine skills to include inpatient, outpatient, and obstetrical care

Eligibility Requirements

• Army Medical Corps Officer
• Board certified in Family Medicine
• Full scope Family Physician
• At least two years out of residency by start date
• Army APFT and Ht/Wt standards met

Applicants can apply for the fellowship at the Army Graduate Medical Education website at http://www.mods.army.mil/medicaleducation/. Applications are due by 15 September each year. The website outlines the supplemental material that must be submitted with the application. Complete applications require an interview with the fellowship director.
