PGY - 3
Now
is the time for residents to refine their skills in pre, post and operative
management of most routine general surgical problems. A resident should be
able to see a patient in clinic, determine a need for surgery, initiate and
complete a preoperative workup, perform the surgery, and manage any complication
that arises postoperatively. The resident is also expected to become involved in
the more complex surgical cases, working directly with chief resident and staff.
Complex procedures are allocated on an individual basis. While the
standard surgical text is still the primary reference, residents are expected
have a working knowledge of the current literature in any given topic relating
to their patients. This can be achieved either “on-line” or via a
review periodical such as “Selected Readings in General Surgery” or “The
Scientific American Critical Care of the Surgical Patient.”
The first exposure to the mock oral examination is encountered during
this year.
