PGY – 2
The
year is spent reinforcing the primary skills learned during internship and
taking them to the next level. Madigan is operating as a level-2 trauma
center and the majority of civilian trauma in
Pierce
County
primarily is sent to us. A supervisory role is now taken in on call (as
the senior surgeon “in house”) as SOD and the resident in the ICU (on that
rotation). The source of reading should remain the primary textbook of
Surgery. In addition, a short research experience is designed to allow the
resident to formulate and plan an experiment (either basic science or clinical)
that can be carried out by either themselves or a colleague during the next few
years. In addition, the resident will also be allowed to participate in
one of many ongoing research protocols that the staff are involved with.
In this format, the resident should be able to technically complete one
experiment during the rotation that can be used as a vehicle for presentation or
publication. The majority of the year is, again, spent on general surgery
with additional rotations in GI at Madigan and a trauma ICU rotation offered at
Harborview
Trauma
Center
in
Seattle
.
