Prior Military Service

Retired military officers and enlisted personnel may collect their full military retirement in addition to their civil service salary. Previous military service may count toward creditable federal government service and retirement calculations. You may apply for civil service positions while still on active duty and may start working while on terminal leave. There is no waiting period after retirement for employment of military retirees filling positions covered under special salary rates.

Reservists and National Guardsmen are authorized up to 120 hours military leave a year for training. If deployed to support a contingency, there are various benefit preservation and job protection entitlements.
