This Prenatal Class Series offers 4 classes every month on Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. All classes are in the Sakakini Conference Room on the 3rd floor outside the Birthing Center. While anyone can attend these classes at any time during pregnancy, we suggest the classes would be most helpful for pregnant women greater than 20 weeks. The classes are as follows:

The 1st Thursday of every month

Understanding Pregnancy and Labor. This class is geared toward pregnancy changes in the 3rd trimester. This class also discusses stages of labor, signs of preterm labor and body mechanics of labor.

The 2nd Thursday of every month

Understanding Birth and Comfort Techniques for Labor. This class follows a patient on her journey toward labor, birth, and meeting her newborn. Comfort techniques on relaxation, breathing, massage, visualization, hydrotherapy, and support of a woman in labor.

The 3rd Thursday of every month

Understanding Medical Procedures in Labor and Caesarean Birth. We will discuss birth planning, induction of labor versus augmentation of labor, pain relief options, and second stage interventions. Caesarean births – We will discuss: Reasons for Caesarean sections, the surgery itself, how Caesarean delivery impacts the family, and caesarean recovery.

The 4th Thursday of every month:

Discusses postpartum care of the Mom: Physical changes, emotions, lifestyle changes & tips, care of the newborn and breastfeeding basics.

Contraceptive Options Class Every Friday

The class reviews medical options for birth control. Open to any woman 14 years of age and up. Attendees desiring a birth control method at the end of the class may be eligible to obtain a prescription. Women desiring an IUD, contraceptive implant, or sterilization procedure can schedule an appointment to meet one-on-one with a provider for placement or discussion. Class begins at 1:00 p.m., ending at 2:30 p.m. The contraceptive education class is held in the OB/GYN clinic located on the ground floor of the Medical Mall. Patients may check in at the front desk of the clinic and will then be directed to the class location.

Breastfeeding Classes:

Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes are available on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month. Class times for the 2nd Thursday of each month is from 6 – 8 p.m. and on the 4th Thursday of each month from 1 – 3 p.m. These two-hour classes cover information that every mother/couple should know who plans to breastfeed. This class will introduce the benefits of breastfeeding, how breast milk is made, what to expect the first few weeks and beyond, how to know that your baby is getting enough milk, helpful techniques on positioning and latching baby, prevention and treatment of common problems, when and how to ask for assistance with breastfeeding, going back to work, and the pumping, collecting, and storing of breast milk. This class will also discuss physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes the mother may experience during the postpartum period. Classes really do make a difference and meet in the Sakakini Conference Room on the third floor of the Hospital Tower, across from the Birthing Center.
