Directions

From I-5 take exit 122 to the Madigan gate. From the gate make a right at the second traffic light into the Medical Mall entrance. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Due to the popularity of Madigan and the large population we serve, patient parking may be a challenge at times.

About

The Optometry Clinic provides the highest quality comprehensive eye care for patients through multidisciplinary customer focused services. We will provide a spectrum of specialty care, education and counseling regarding the eyes, and services that ensure the visual readiness of our Soldiers. The Optometry Clinic conducts comprehensive eye exams, diagnosis of ocular disease, care of manageable ocular trauma, and limited medical contact lens fittings (specialty service limited to certain corneal conditions). Our clinic is staffed to meet the needs of active duty service members, thus active duty service members have priority. We have a limited number of appointments that are available for family members and retirees, but our services are well-complemented by a large pool of TRICARE eye care providers in the private sector. Depending upon an individual’s TRICARE Status, non-active duty patients may self-refer themselves at no cost to a TRICARE Panel member. Non-active duty beneficiaries who have difficulty in gaining an eye examination at one of our military clinics, may learn more about their opportunity to self-refer themselves to a private sector provider by personally consulting with Madigan’s Patient Referral Center or calling the referral center (Phone number is 253-968-2903). The Patient Referral Center can provide a list of eligible TRICARE eye care providers.

Active Duty military, Tricare Prime, and Tricare Plus over the age of 5 years old.

Primary Services

  • Routine Eye Exams
  • Contact Lens Renewals. Non-medical or cosmetic contact lens services are at the doctor’s discretion. Clinic resources are limited and non-medical or cosmetic contact lens services (fitting, evaluation, or supply) are not a TRICARE benefit. In order to obtain a renewed contact lens prescription, patients MUST bring current CL information (boxes or past prescription) and bring CLs to eye exam. Contact Lens Services may require a follow-up visit. Patients are encouraged to wear spectacles for all routine eye exams.
  • Diabetic Eye Exams(Tricare Plus patients should request an Ophthalmology Consult from their Primary Care Manager)
  • Active Military Physicals
  • Emergent Walk-Ins (acute symptoms within 48 hours); No Walk-In Routine Eye Exams offered

*All Active Duty Military, Retired Military, and National Guard & Reserves on orders for 30 days or more can use our prescription services. Our Optical Dispensary can order valid glasses prescriptions from civilian or military sources.

Walk-in Services

  • Active Duty Physical Exams (except Class 1 Flight and DODMERB)
  • Military Glasses and Inserts Orders (with current prescription)
  • Emergent Walk-Ins (acute symptoms within 48 hours)
    • Patients with sudden vision loss should report to the emergency room
  • MEDPROS Vision Screenings (For Soldiers who do not require spectacles or can show all required optical devices are in possession)
  • Driver’s License Vision Screening Renewals (except WA State or states that require an ocular health assessment)

ATTENTION ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY

It is imperative that all military members understand the difference between their annual vision requirements involving medical readiness:

  • A vision SCREENING consists of basic visual acuity testing and is an annual requirement of all Army service members regardless of spectacle wear or not. In most cases, this can be performed during the annual Periodic Health Assessment (PHA) or done at the unit level annotated by a unit MEDPROS representative. Walk-In MEDPROS Vision Screenings are for Soldiers who do not require spectacles or can show all required optical devices are in possession.

  • A vision (eye) EXAM is recommended every one or two years for those military members who have been prescribed prescription eyewear. These service members are required to maintain two pair of glasses as well as inserts for their protective masks or military combat eye protection if indicated (Uncorrected vision worse than 20/40 require optical inserts).
