What should I expect?

In order to help your surgery go as smoothly as possible there are things you can do to ensure you are fully prepared on the big day. Please review all medications you are currently taking with your doctor at your pre-operative appointment and make sure you know the plan as the surgery day approaches. Discuss any questions you may have with your family and be prepared to discuss them at your pre-operative appointment with your surgeon and support staff.

Please arrange for transportation and your designated escort before your day of surgery and make sure you have child and pet care arranged in the days and weeks leading up to your surgery date.

Follow all instructions for the Chlorhexidine antimicrobial wipes (CHG) and mouthwash if these were indicated along with your procedure. Oral hygiene is incredibly important in making a healthy recovery. Please brush your teeth thoroughly and often in the days leading up to your procedure and during your recovery period. We recommend brushing your teeth in the morning, after each meal, and again before bed. This helps to prevent the likelihood of developing post- operative pneumonia after your procedure.

Please refrain from eating or drinking 8 hours before your scheduled report time. In addition to food and drink, prohibited items also include chewing gum, cough drops, smokeless tobacco, and hard candies. These items can increase your saliva production and may delay or cause a cancellation of your scheduled procedure. You may be permitted sips of water to take morning medications, but this is determined by your anesthesiologist and surgeon. If you have not been told that sips of water are permitted then follow the strict nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to your scheduled report time recommendations.
