The Day before Surgery

Call the Surgical Services Center between 1400 (2 PM) and 1600 (4 PM) the business day before your procedure to receive your report time for surgery at 253-968-3015, Option #2.

Notify your Surgeon if you have any changes to your health (cold, fever, or any injuries to the operative area like scratches, cuts, or scrapes.)

Arrange for transportation to and from Madigan. For your safety, if you are having an outpatient procedure you are not allowed to drive or leave alone after sedation. Please ensure your designated escort remains in the facility during your procedure, and that someone is available to stay with you for 24 hours after your procedure. Arrange for child and pet care for the duration of your stay.

Follow the skin preparation guide provided by your surgery team. CHG handout Please shower the night before your procedure. Be sure to lauder all sleep wear and bedding the day before surgery. This helps to decrease the likelihood of developing a surgical site infection. Do not shave any part of your body for 24 hours before using the CHG wipes or on your procedure day if wipes are not indicated. Facial shaving is Ok to do if you are not having facial surgery.

Take your routinely prescribed medications the day and evening prior to your surgery, unless otherwise instructed by your Surgeon or Anesthesia Provider. If you are taking anticoagulants or blood thinners please discuss this with your surgeon prior to surgery.

Do not eat or drink to include gum and mints eight (8) hours before your scheduled report time. If the Anesthesia provider permits, you may have up to 8 ounces of the following, at least two hours before prior to your report time: Water, Apple Juice, Gatorade.

You should abstain from smoking for as long as possible both before and after surgery. For assistance with quitting tobacco products please call (1-800-QUITNOW) or visit

For example if your report time was 0600, you would stop eating and drinking at 1000 pm the night before, and between 1000 and 0400 am you could have up to 8 ounces of a clear liquid only, no other foods or liquids permitted. From 0400 to 0600 you would be prohibited from any and all food and liquid items.
